Four North Shore hospitals are among the best for adults in the New York metropolitan area, according to a U.S. News & World Report analysis.
Ranked fifth in the region, St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn is the best-ranked Long Island hospital in its 10th straight year on the publication’s 27th annual “Best Hospitals” list.
Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola ranked eighth, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park ranked ninth and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset tied for 16th on the list of the top hospitals in New York City, northern New Jersey, Westchester County and Long Island.
St. Francis also ranked 16th for cardiology and heart surgery, 19th for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, and 34th for geriatrics among nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide that U.S. News & World Report reviews.
“We take great pride in receiving this nationwide recognition for the past decade,” said Ruth E. Hennessey, St. Francis’ executive vice president and chief administrative officer, in a statement. “Being consistently ranked in cardiology and heart surgery as well as noncardiac specialties is a true testament to our ongoing mission of providing the very best in patient care.”
Winthrop-University Hospital is ranked 49th in the nation for geriatrics and got eight “high-performing” designations for other specialties.
NYU Langone Medical Center, with which Winthrop is planning to merge, ranked second in the New York region and 10th overall in the nation. Winthrop’s Children’s Medical Center also ranked nationally in 10 specialties last month on U.S. News & World Report’s similar list of top children’s hospitals.
“These impressive rankings, both regional and national, are a testament to the high quality care that is delivered each day across a range of specialties by our superior clinical team,” said John F. Collins, Winthrop’s president and chief executive.
Long Island Jewish Medical Center ranked 47th nationally for gynecology and was marked “high-performing” in eight other specialties. North Shore University Hospital got two “high-performing” designations but no national rankings for specialties.
The hospitals are run by Northwell Health, which had nine other hospitals get “high-performing” marks. Its Cohen Children’s Medical Center ranked nationally for seven specialties on last month’s list of children’s hospitals.
U.S. News & World Report uses data on patient safety, survival, nurse staffing and other elements to develop its hospital rankings. The list ranks hospitals nationally for certain specialties and specific procedures and also creates a national “honor roll” of 20 outstanding hospitals in addition to its regional and statewide rankings.
In addition to NYU Langone’s No. 10 honor roll rank, New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell ranked sixth and Mt. Sinai Hospital ranked 15th in the nation.
