Herricks High School senior Karina Ng returned from an eye-opening experience at the All-National Honor Ensembles celebration in Orlando, Florida. From Nov. 4-7, she joined talented musicians from throughout the country for rehearsals, workshops and a culminating concert.
The National Association for Music Education established its All-National Honor Ensembles as the ultimate recognition of student musical performance. Karina, a violist, participated in the All-National Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music’s Director of Orchestral Activities Soo Han, the ensemble played Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” and a Korean folk song titled, “Arirang.”
“It was a really cool experience that wasn’t just about one type of music – it included a guitar ensemble and the traditional ensembles,” Karina said. “It was nice meeting people from places I’d never expect. Music brings us all together; it’s a calming topic to talk about.”
