Hillside Grade School students and their families in the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District spread positive messages across the building during the school’s first “Chalk the Walk” event on Oct. 23. The special event was held during dismissal in honor of Unity Day, a national movement against bullying which was started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.
Hillside students and staff were encouraged to wear orange to mark the important day. During dismissal, students received chalk and filled the blacktop and sidewalks with positive drawings and affirmations connecting to what Unity Day is all about – kindness, acceptance and inclusion. The school community joined together, and by the end of the event, the school grounds were successfully covered in encouraging and inspirational thoughts and illustrations.
